Life calls for Ireland to vote in favour of the 8th Amendment

Life is calling on the people of Ireland to use the referendum announced last night to stand up for protection of the unborn child and pregnant women in crisis.

The Irish Government has announced that the referendum in May will ask people whether to repeal the 8th Amendment which has protected unborn babies for over three decades by giving an equal right to life to both the mother and baby. However whilst it has announced the referendum it has also declared that there will be a proposal for abortion on demand up to 12 weeks once the referendum has been held and the amendment has been repealed.

Life’s Director of Education Anne Scanlan said “‘It is extremely presumptuous for the Government to plan a bill for abortion on demand up to 12 weeks before the public has even voted on whether they want to repeal the Amendment protecting unborn babies. It is important that people are fully informed about what is at stake here.

It is a travesty that a referendum such as this should ever happen in a country that for so long has held out as a beacon of hope against the relentless battering from the pro-abortion lobby. Ireland has long stood for equal rights for both mother and baby, offering some of the best health care for women in the world. We see the announcement of this referendum as a call to action for all who are on the side of equal rights, to send a clear and unambiguous message to the abortion lobby and their political allies that the people of Ireland will stand up for the protection of human life and support for women in crisis. This is the time for your voices to be heard and Life stands beside you.”
