Northern Ireland Secretary must ensure law against abortion is respected

Life calls on the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland Karen Bradley not to bow to pressure from political allies of the abortion industry and impose abortion on Northern Ireland through the back door.

Today pro-abortion MPs were able to get an amendment to the Northern Ireland Bill which imposes a duty on the Secretary of State to issue guidance to officers in Northern Ireland Departments on how to exercise their functions in relation to sections 58 and 59 of the Offences Against the Persons Act, which makes abortion illegal there.

Life’s Director of Advocacy Anne Scanlan said “We will hold the Northern Ireland Secretary to her word today that any guidance she issues will not empower civil servants in Northern Ireland to act as lawmakers or in breach of the law. The termination of unborn children remains a criminal offence in Northern Ireland.

For two days a group of MPs sitting in Westminster have pompously taken it upon themselves to decide what is best for the people of Northern Ireland. Unashamedly they have declared that they have been collaborating with the largest abortion providers as they try to expand abortion provision across the UK and to Northern Ireland. A recent COMRES poll showed that 66% of Northern Irish women believe that Westminster should not dictate a change in the law for them. The actions of pro-abortion MPs today represent a slap in the face of the people of Northern Ireland and should be roundly condemned by all who believe in democracy and the territorial integrity of Northern Ireland.

We urge the Government and MPs to recognise the unhealthy and dangerous alliance between the abortion industry and their political allies in parliament. They want abortion on demand everywhere, for any reason and at anytime. Allowing their agenda will result in the termination of many more lives than the 9 million lost in England and Wales since 1967and will put vulnerable women at risk. The Government and MPs must have the courage to stand up to the abortion lobby in order to protect vulnerable women and their unborn children.”
