A Night That Changed Everything
Laura never imagined her life would change so suddenly. What began as a date with the older son of close family friends ended in a way that left her shaken and confused. He was someone her parents trusted, but when they went back to his flat, Laura felt pressured and taken advantage of. They ended up having sex, not because she wanted to, but because she felt pushed into it.
The next morning, his words were firm: “Don’t tell anyone.”
Laura tried to carry on as normal, but inside she felt used, empty, and deeply unsettled. She avoided him whenever she could, unsure how to reconcile what had happened.
A Positive Test
Six weeks later, everything changed. A positive result confirmed what she hadn’t been ready to face: she was pregnant.
When Laura told him, his reaction was cold and shocking. He again told her not to tell anyone and insisted she get an abortion. She felt trapped. Laura felt sick and even more alone when she discovered he had confided in a mutual friend. Rather than offering comfort, that friend sided with him, repeating his demands. “Hurry up and get rid of it,” she said more than once.
Laura was scared, isolated, and heartbroken. She had no idea what to do next.
Reaching Out to Life’s Helpline
In the midst of this dark time, she reached out to Life’s Helpline. On the other end of the phone, a gentle, compassionate listener asked questions that invited Laura to pause and reflect.
“Can I ask how you feel about your pregnancy?” the listener asked softly.
Laura hesitated. “I don’t know,” she admitted.
The Turning Point
That conversation became a turning point. For the first time, someone was asking her what she wanted, instead of telling her what to do. As the session went on, Laura voiced her fears: that she might cause tension between her family and his, that she could lose her friend, that she would disappoint the people around her. Slowly, she began to realise that her thoughts so far had been focused on the demands and expectations of others – not of her own heart.
“I think I’ve been worrying more about not upsetting other people than about how I feel…” she reflected.
The listener didn’t rush her or push her in any direction. Instead, Life’s Helpline gave Laura the space to explore her own thoughts and feelings about her pregnancy. For the first time in weeks, she felt truly heard.
Finding Clarity
Over the course of two more sessions, Laura began to find her clarity. As she talked through her emotions and faced her fears, she settled on what she really wanted.
“I’m having my baby. I know that’s what I want.”
Laura’s journey wasn’t easy. She had faced rejection, pressure, betrayal, and fear. But with compassionate support, she was able to block out the noise around her and think for herself.
