Four Ways to Make an Impact with Life

This time of year is all about fresh new starts. But when a woman finds out she’s pregnant unexpectedly, or gets a prenatal diagnosis that complicates the pregnancy, it doesn’t always feel like an exciting new adventure.

At Life, we are proud of the work we do to support women and families facing unexpected or crisis pregnancies. We’re passionate about supporting our client services to ensure that everyone who asks for support gets what they need. But we can’t do this without our donors, supporters and volunteers.

Here are some of the impactful ways you can help us change lives and create brighter futures for those who need it most.

If you’re not the outdoor kind, why not organise your own fundraising event?

Have you ever thought about using your passions and talents to bring people together for a good cause? Organising your own fundraising event is a fun and creative way to support Life while involving your friends, family, or community.

Ideas to get started:

  • Host a bake sale or coffee morning.
  • Plan a trivia night or talent show.
  • Organise a sponsored run, walk, cycle or swim.
  • Celebrate your birthday or special occasion by asking for donations instead of gifts.

Why it matters: Every penny raised goes directly toward providing vital support for mothers and families in need of a safe place to bring their new baby home to.

TWO Gain a qualification in counselling skills

…and apply to volunteer on our National Helpline as a skilled listener*

When someone reaches out to Life’s helpline, they’re often in their most vulnerable moments, seeking guidance, reassurance, or just someone to listen.  As a skilled listener, you have the opportunity to provide compassionate, non-judgmental support to individuals navigating unexpected pregnancies, a tragic loss, or challenging circumstances.

What you’ll do: Helpline volunteers respond to calls, emails and texts, offering the first steps of support to vulnerable clients who need the service support, be that an appointment with one of our counsellors, advocacy support for housing or practical support for a new mum-to-be or help with born children (up to the age 5yrs).

Why it matters: For many, a simple conversation can be a turning point—providing hope and connecting them to the resources they need to move forward.

No prior experience? No problem! Being a recognised NCFE CACHE provider, Life runs fully accredited courses in counselling skills.  Invest in yourself with an NCFE CACHE Level 2 Certificate in Counselling Skills comprehensive training to equip you with the skills and knowledge needed to make a meaningful impact.

Take action today: Visit learn.lifecharity.org.uk today for more information and enrolment.

*All helpline volunteers must hold at least a Level 2 qualification in counselling skills.  There is a fee for this course.  Once an individual completes the Level 2 qualification, they are eligible to apply to become a volunteer on Life’s National Helpline.  If successful, further in-house training is provided free of charge.

THREE Become a Regular Supporter

Sometimes, the most impactful actions are the simplest ones. By setting up a regular donation through direct debit, you can provide consistent support that enables Life to plan for the future and meet the ongoing needs of the women and families we serve.  It doesn’t have to be by Direct Debit, you can become a regular donor by signing up to the Unity Lottery, or by donating a portion of your eBay profits through eBay for Charity.  Click here to find out all the ways you can donate regularly to Life.

How it works:

  • Choose an amount that works for you as a Direct Debit (even small monthly donations make a big difference).
  • Or sign up for any one of the ways you can make a regular donation to Life.  You can find all the details on our website.
  • Sit back and relax, reading our monthly e-newsletter to see the difference you are making

Why it matters: Regular donations allow us to maintain critical services like our National Helpline and our Life Houses. They also ensure that we can respond quickly to urgent needs when crises arise.

FOUR Donate Items to Life Shops or Baby Supplies for Families in Need

One of the most tangible ways to support Life is by donating items to our shops or providing essential supplies for mothers and babies in need.

What you can donate:

  • Clothing, toys, and household items for Life shops
  • Baby clothes, equipment, nappies, baby milk formula, and toiletries for the families we support

Where to donate: Drop off items at your nearest Life shop. Get in touch at fundraising@lifecharity.org.uk or check our website. You can also organise a donation drive in your community to gather supplies on a larger scale.

Why it matters: These donations help struggling families meet their basic needs while also raising funds for Life’s services through sales at our charity shops and online.
